# How Shimizu Corporation Uses Enscape for Internal Digital Design Training

[Shimizu Corporation](https://www.shimz.co.jp/en/) is an architectural, civil engineering, and general contracting firm widely recognized as one of the top 5 contractors in Japan and among the top 20 in the world. Its work involves proposing, planning, designing, building, and managing the operation and maintenance of offices, plants, schools, hospitals, and other buildings.

In addition to its main business of construction, Shimizu is focusing on strengthening its use of digital technology—Enscape is particularly used as one of the powerful design tools by its in-house architectural designers.

## Company-wide digital transformation initiative

The company's efforts in DX (digital transformation) were recognized and it was selected as a "DX Stocks 2023." This is the [third consecutive year](https://www.shimz.co.jp/digital-strategy/) that Shimizu Corporation has received this recognition, and it is the only general contractor in Japan to achieve this.

DX Stocks are companies that have established internal mechanisms to promote DX that will lead to increased corporate value and have demonstrated outstanding achievements in digital technology.

Since the pandemic, the approach toward work style in Japan has been reassessed. Given the prevalent culture of extended work hours, Shimizu now emphasizes the need to streamline its work processes.

“We want to add new value to buildings that we design for customers, as well as to the facilities. In order to do this, everyone needs to be able to use digital technology, so we are strengthening the promotion of the use of digital technology within the company, including training,” shares Jun Ueda, General Manager of Shimizu’s Digital Design Center (DDC).

## Enscape for internal training program

In 2017, Shimizu launched its DDC in Design Division. DDC manages the following areas of the business: computational design, known as [Shimz DDE](https://www.shimz.co.jp/dde/english/index.html); [BIM](https://blog.chaos.com/what-is-bim?hsLang=en), known as Shimz One BIM; and visualization, which includes CG, animation, VR, and modeling.

[Enscape](https://www.chaos.com/enscape) was introduced to the company in 2020. Shimizu runs training programs for new employees as part of their onboarding, and one of the programs within the computational design area is learning to use real-time rendering software with Enscape and [Rhino](https://www.chaos.com/enscape/rhino-rendering).

“The in-house architects design 3D models and create visual images simultaneously. This synchronous approach enables them to review and refine the 3D models in real time. From there, we find that improving quality has become much faster, and the visual quality has also increased. Enscape makes it much easier to create images than in the past without it,” shares Hiroyoshi Satake, Architect and Manager of the DDC.

Midori Watanabe, Visualization Chief of DDC, adds, “I think it’s amazing how we can use real-time rendering to review the rendered images quickly compared to the traditional process. Using Enscape with Rhino cuts the rendering time in half compared to if we weren’t using Enscape. The real-time rendering software training runs for a day and a half, and after it, the participants are already proficient because Enscape is so easy to use.”

## Projects from the training program

A program called ‘Sketch Training’ is available for participants to take part in before they begin their Enscape training. This program enables them to advance their composition and sketching skills. They are shown various [modeling techniques](https://blog.chaos.com/architectural-rendering-techniques?hsLang=en), and while completing basic assignments, the participants learn the expressive power of rendering by tracing real buildings.

At the final stage of the training program, the participants are given a site and are tasked to design it and express it in various ways. The participants present a final project at the end to showcase the entire process they went through, from design studies using various tools to the final visual presentation.

## Encouraging early Enscape users with study sessions

In addition to training for new employees, DDC also hosts study sessions. The sessions are designed so participants in the training program can share and discuss any issues they encounter with Enscape, find solutions together, and improve the quality of their CG renderings.

A session starts with a hearing in advance, followed by problem-solving and reproducing renderings in Enscape. 

“We regularly hold study sessions to encourage our power Enscape users to improve the quality of their CG renderings. Based on exemplary quality renderings, participants learn how to reproduce it quickly using Enscape. As a professional renderer, I lecture on rendering analysis and composition and share techniques to enhance expressive skills,” explains Midori Watanabe.
