How much time are architects really saving with AI?

According to our latest industry survey of nearly 800 architects and designers worldwide, 86% of those currently using AI report at least some time savings in their visualization and design work. This article digs into the data and looks into where those savings are being realized across different firm sizes.

Key takeaways:

📌Nearly 9 in 10 AI users surveyed are experiencing efficiency gains with AI.

📌Medium-sized firms (50-99 employees) are seeing the greatest time savings of 10-15+ hours per week.

📌Time savings happen most in concept design or ideation and image enhancement.

📌Firms using AI for video editing are 10% more likely to save 10-15+ hours per week.

Where is AI saving architects the most time?

The survey data points clearly to two phases where architects are seeing the biggest time savings: concept design and ideation (cited by 48% of AI users) and image enhancement (40%).

  • Concept design & ideation (48%): Architects are saving the most time with AI in the early project phases. Tools like Chaos Veras give designers the chance to quickly test and visualize different scenarios in a matter of minutes, not hours or days.
  • Image enhancement (40%): Moving from an almost-perfect render to a client-ready visual is now sped up significantly with AI image enhancers that can improve and even change the look of people, vegetation, and surfaces.

A smaller but notable group, around 25%, reported significant time savings in material selection and asset generation for visualizations. This signals something important: AI isn't just a concept-phase tool anymore. It's starting to work its way into the production end of the visualization pipeline.

It’s also worth noting that 14% of architects are using AI to assist with video generation. Firms using AI for video editing are 10% more likely to save 10-15+ hours per week, suggesting even marginal time savings accumulate significantly in animation projects.

How much time is being saved across different firm sizes?

86% of architects using AI have experienced significant time savings, according to the 2026 Chaos and Architizer survey. For the majority (59%), this equates to saving at least 5 hours per week.

In general, the larger the firm, the more hours are saved through using AI tools, though it isn't perfectly linear.

  • Freelancers and small firms tend to see modest, steady gains (5–10 hours weekly for many).

  • Mid-sized firms in the 50–99 employee range are the standout performers, with 30% reporting savings of 10–15+ hours per week.

  • Firms of 100+ employees see slightly fewer gains at the top end, possibly because larger workflows introduce more coordination overhead alongside efficiency tools. Nonetheless, 23% are still saving 10+ hours per week.

How satisfied are architects using AI tools?

The survey also reveals that satisfaction with AI is highest among those who fully commit to it. Of architects who describe themselves as "very satisfied" with AI results, 62% are also fully embracing it, not just dabbling. The architects still in experimentation mode are the ones reporting mixed results, inconsistent outputs, and frustration with workflow fit.

The 40% of survey respondents not yet using AI cited practical barriers, most often: cost, a lack of time to explore new tools, and challenges with software integration.

Where to start with AI

The report identifies two initial areas where architects can save time with AI: concept design and image enhancement. These are low-risk, high-frequency tasks where AI tools are already well-developed.

Tools that integrate directly into your existing rendering workflow, rather than sitting alongside it as a separate step, tend to close the integration gap fastest. That's the approach behind Chaos's AI-assisted visualization tools, which are built to work within the pipelines architects already use.

One such tool is Veras, our AI visualization solution that's powered by Nano Banana and integrates with CAD tools such as Revit and SketchUp. It transforms your sketches, 2D images, and 3D models into great-looking renderings and animations in moments. It's also built into Enscape for even faster and easier real-time visualization.
