How to master Veras AI: an architect’s prompt guide

If you’ve ever stared at a prompt box and wondered why your "cool modern house" prompt resulted in a generic, uninspired render, you are certainly not alone.

As architects, we know that our craft is all about vision; it’s a complex balancing act of spatial problem-solving, environmental context, materiality, and the human vibe. AI doesn't know your client, it hasn't walked the physical site, and it definitely doesn't possess your unique design philosophy. Because of this, AI can never, and should never, make your core creative decisions.

Today, I want to walk you through a structured approach to prompting with Veras AI, breaking down how to organize your thoughts, structure your prompts, and use keywords to rapidly iterate your designs. Think of Veras as your ultimate digital wingman—a powerhouse companion to speed up your workflow, test out rapid iterations, and visualize your wildest ideas on the fly.

Finding your workflow groove

Just like running a real design crew, there are a million ways to collaborate with Veras, and your prompting style will totally depend on how you like to work. I would like to highlight two key approaches to prompting with Veras:

  • The Step-by-Step Hacker: You might like breaking the design down into bite-sized micro-tasks. You can ask for a basic conceptual change with the first prompt, tweak the generated result with the second prompt, and then prompt Veras to dial in a specific roofline or a cool facade detail in the third prompt, and so on. This builds complexity through a progression of manageable instructions.
  • The "Brain Dump" Director: Alternatively, you might prefer to drop one massive, highly detailed brief that unloads all your constraints, stylistic vibes, and spatial needs at once. This lets Veras cook up a comprehensive first pass in its own space and give you the output in a single go.

Whichever workflow you choose, the quality of your results hinges entirely on pre-information. Setting the stage by feeding Veras the right background, visual direction, and project goals before you ask it to generate anything is an absolute game-changer.

The anatomy of a perfect prompt

To eliminate the guesswork, I rely on a strict formula for every prompt. A successful prompt is built from three main building blocks: task, attributes, and constraints:

1. The task

Think of this as a clear, straightforward project title rather than a detailed description.

  • Start with an action: Lead with a strong verb like enhance, visualize, or transform.
  • Stick to one goal: Focus on a single objective so you don't confuse the model.

2. Scene attributes

This is the umbrella stage that defines everything about the scene itself. These four parts are equal-weight inputs that work in parallel:

  • Components: Describe what physically exists in your image. Identify your main subject, the environment, material details (like wood grain), and add things like people or cars for a sense of scale.
  • Style: Dictate the overarching mood and visual quality. Reference real publications (like Dezeen) or specify quality benchmarks like "hyper-realistic".
  • Light & Color: This dictates exactly how light interacts with your scene. Define the time of day, the quality of light (softness/direction), and the color temperature.
  • Camera: Translate your photographic vision by defining lens specifications (e.g., 24mm or 50mm) and camera position (e.g., eye-level or aerial). Always explicitly ask for perfectly straight verticals to avoid keystoning.

3. Constraints

While the attributes build your scene, constraints protect it. Because AI reads text much like a human, telling it only what to avoid can sometimes backfire. Split your constraints into two parts:

  • Affirmative (Do's): Tell the AI what it must actively preserve (e.g., "Maintain the exact structural silhouette"). Always state these before your negative rules.
  • Negative (Don'ts): Tell the AI what it must not include to act as an exclusionary guardrail (e.g., "No warped geometry or distorted structural lines").

Write your own prompt

Once you have the anatomy down, you can start building your own prompts, highly tuned, pre-crafted prompts that act as your baseline. I have created a DIY sheet for you to put in your ideas following the anatomy breakdown, and truly mastering the technique. Try using the sheet, and you will quickly have the structure ready at your fingertips.

The "Swap" technique

The true magic of using Veras, however, is utilizing a Swap List to create infinite variations from a single prompt that you have been regularly using, without rewriting the whole thing.

Let's look at a Human Scale Close-up prompt example from My Architectural Prompt Guide:

The image on the top left is the original base, and the one on the right is the generated result with Veras. Once you create a complete prompt that can work universally, you can create a list of keywords that I call the Swap List. By referencing a Swap List of materials, objects, styles, and all other details present in your prompt, you can change the entire physical nature of the generated image in seconds.

Notice the two keywords in the prompt that are highlighted, Person & Human. If I want to change the result to an animal-scale close-up instead and replace those two keywords with Dog & Animal, I get the same result but on an animal scale:

  • Swap Material: Change "cardboard" to "foam" or "plastic" to instantly shift from a warm, fibrous look to a clean, stark presentation.
  • Swap Atmosphere: Change the setting from "Spring environment" to "Winter" or add "thick rolling morning fog" to completely alter the mood while preserving your geometry.
  • Swap Camera: Change "eye-level perspective" to a "high drone view" or a "dramatically low worm's-eye perspective" to radically reframe the story you are telling.

Building your own Swap List vocabulary—categorizing your favorite verbs, architectural elements, lighting conditions, and camera lenses—will make your iteration process blisteringly fast.

Final thoughts

At the end of the day, every prompt is a possibility. By clarifying your vision, structuring your ideas logically, and using intentional constraints, you can ensure that Veras acts as the ultimate digital assistant. You are the mastermind.
