What is 3D rendering?

Put simply, 3D rendering is the process that starts with 3D modeling and progresses through several stages, ultimately using a computer to generate a 2D image from a digital three-dimensional scene.

To generate an image, specific methodologies and special software and hardware are used. In this process, the 3D scene is converted into a 2D image through rendering software. Therefore, we need to understand that 3D rendering is a process—the one that builds the image. Rendering is the final process of creating the actual 2D image or animation from the prepared scene, which can take from fractions of a second to minutes and even hours for a single image or frame, depending on complexity.

It’s easy to see these terms used interchangeably, but they describe different parts of the creative process. Understanding the main benefits and use cases of 3D visualization will help you see how it fits into the bigger picture:

In advertising, I would dare to say that 90% of automotive commercials are CG, or even more. In the architecture industry, many traditional techniques to create representations, such as scale models, have been replaced with photorealistic imagery to ensure we can see exactly how something will look once it’s built. 3D rendering is now a standard tool for visualization, marketing, and training, helping to drive sales by creating compelling visuals that enhance product presentations and promotional materials.

Today, professionals can find and utilize a wide range of 3D rendering software to improve their workflows and visual output. How is a 3D rendered image generated?

Most 3D projects follow a similar rendering process, whether you’re creating photorealistic images for real estate development or producing visual effects for feature films:

  • Model the scene: Create detailed models (or import three-dimensional data stored in CAD/BIM files) to build a complete scene.

  • Apply materials and textures: Assign surfaces (wood, glass, metal) so rendering software can calculate how each material responds when light hits it, including light refraction and reflections.

  • Set up realistic lighting: Add a light source (sun/sky, HDRIs, studio lights) to create a believable real-life look, including realistic shadows.

  • Choose camera angles and framing: Set the view using camera angles and perspective projection to match the story you want the final result to tell.

  • Render the final output: The rendering engine calculates how light behaves across the scene, turning 3D models and data into the final visual output (or a sequence of frames for animation). This is where computer processing power, scene complexity, and rendering times matter most. especially with complex scenes.

  • Post-process and deliver: Refine the final product (color, contrast, motion blur, depth of field) and export the correct format for web, print, or playback (frames displayed sequentially for video). Post-processing includes final adjustments such as color correction and atmospheric effects.

Two pieces of software, with different characteristics, are commonly used to generate images and animations: rendering engines and game engines. Render engines use a technique called ray tracing, while game engines use a technique called rasterization—and some engines mix both techniques, but we will talk about that later on.

First, let's talk about the ray tracing process. V-Ray uses this technique.

What is ray tracing?

Ray tracing generates an image by tracing rays of light from a camera through a virtual plane of pixels and simulating the effects of its encounters with objects. To create the effects, different rays must be traced. For example, to obtain shadows certain rays must be traced, to obtain reflections other rays must be traced, and so on.

This technique is used to create photorealistic images. If we have to calculate a large number of lights and objects in our scene it can dramatically increase the time it takes to render an image. 3D artists must consider the implications of everything in a scene, including reflections, refractions and translucencies, as well as more complex elements such as displacement, sub-surface scattering and instancing.

What is rasterization?

There is another very popular methodology that allows us to obtain images incredibly quickly, but with the absence of the realism that ray tracing offers. Rasterization is very common in game engines, and its most important advantage is that it offers real-time experience where viewers can move around in and interact with the 3D scene.

In rasterization, objects on the screen are created from a mesh of virtual triangles, which create 3D models of objects. In this virtual mesh, the corners of each triangle, known as vertices, intersect with the vertices of other triangles with different shapes and sizes. Every single vertex provides specific information and by gathering all this data, the shape of the object is created. Then, the computer converts the triangles of the 3D models into pixels on the 2D screen and we are presented with the final image.

As I said, this technique is very common in video game engines. It can become computationally intensive because there can be millions of polygons for all objects in a scene, and many millions of pixels on a screen.

Real-time vs. offline rendering: when to use each

Both approaches can produce a realistic image, but they optimize for different goals.

  • Real-time rendering is best when you need speed, interaction, and real-time previews. It’s ideal for design review, early-stage iteration, and client presentations where you want to walk through a complete scene, test materials, and explore lighting quickly. It’s also the foundation for immersive experiences like virtual reality inside interactive virtual environments.

  • Offline rendering (also called pre-rendering or non real-time rendering) is best when your priority is higher image quality and maximum realism. It’s commonly used for final marketing visuals, architectural visualization hero shots, product imagery, and feature films where photorealistic images and refined effects (like accurate reflections, motion blur, depth of field, and complex light behavior) matter more than interactivity.

In practice, many teams use both: real-time for fast decisions and alignment, then offline rendering to create photorealistic images for the final deliverable.

The rendering process can be computationally expensive because it simulates complex physical processes such as lighting, materials, textures, shadows, and reflections to produce a realistic final image, which is why many studios rely on distributed solutions like V-Ray Swarm for faster rendering.
